Bend
serves as the hub of central Oregon, and is considered the gateway to the region's abundant recreation activities. Bordered by the Deschutes National Forest and the Cascade Mountains, Bend lies in west central Oregon along the Deschutes River. This bustling city sits in a peaceful valley at the edge of a Ponderosa pine forest, and it began as a stopping point for wagon trains before they continued their journey across the Cascade Mountains. Today, it's central Oregon's most populated city. Just a few of the things to do near Bend include white water rafting and kayaking through the waterfalls of the Deschutes River, and fishing in more than 500 miles of rivers and streams in the region. Bend also has swimming and canoeing, hiking and paved bike trails, horseback riding, golf and picnicking in the many surrounding parks, lakes and rivers. In wintertime, Mt. Bachelor offers alpine and cross country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling. Mountain bike cyclists enjoy riding in the uncrowded lava fields or desert and lush forested mountain peaks. World class rock climbers come to Bend to scale the mountains at Smith Rock State Park. And, nearby Three Sisters Wilderness is popular with backcountry hikers and campers. All together there is more than 2.5 million acres of national forests in the Bend area! Back in downtown, Bend has art galleries, fine restaurants, outdoor cafes, boutiques and specialty shops. The center of downtown Bend is Drake Park's Mirror Pond, with its Canadian geese, ducks and a pair of swans from Queen Elizabeth's royal swannery!

Central Oregon, as a whole, enjoys 300 days of sunshine per year with low humidity levels and an arid climate. Any variation in the weather depends on elevation and proximity to the mountains. Central Oregon temperatures are basically warm in the summer and cold in the winter, but temperatures drop in the evenings year round due to the high elevation of the region. The Cascade Mountains keeps most of the precipitation over the valleys and on the coast, so Central Oregon receives very little rain. Occasional showers occur during spring and summer, and occasional sleet, hail or snow is possible in the winter. Snow usually falls during the evening and melts off during the day, and averages around 8 inches in January.
