Glide
has an ideal central location from which to base an Oregon vacation. It's nestled along the banks of the beautiful Wild & Scenic North Umpqua River, sixteen miles northeast of the town of Roseburg on Highway 138, which is known as "the Waterfall Highway." You can also find Glide east of Winchester off Interstate 5. The North Umpqua River is well known for its white water rafting and steelhead fly-fishing. Even if you aren't into rafting yourself, it's thrilling to watch from the riverbank. Other popular activities in the Glide area include hunting, hiking, mountain biking, birdwatching, camping, swimming and floating down the river on a river raft. The North Umpqua River Trail takes you to gorgeous waterfalls where you can watch the salmon and steelhead jump. Nearby Swiftwater Park is a perfect spot for a picnic in the shade of the old growth trees. Glide is one of those places where you can be as active as you want, or simply relax and do nothing. The North Umpqua River is a state Scenic Waterway and is within one to two hours of ocean beaches, Crater Lake, the cities of Eugene and Medford, and the towns of Ashland and Bend are less than three hours away.

Oregon enjoys a mild climate with only occasionally experiencing devastating weather such as tornadoes, hailstorms and flooding. The Pacific Ocean greatly influences the climate, as do the mountain ranges. Because of the normal movement of air masses from west to east, most of the systems moving across Oregon have been modified extensively in traveling over the Pacific Ocean. As a result, winter minimum and summer maximum temperatures are greatly moderated. The occurrence of extreme low or high temperatures is generally associated with the occasional invasion of the continental air masses. The state, as a whole, has a winter rainfall climate with occasional snow flurries in the lower elevations. The most rain is received in the western part of the state and in the east in the higher elevations. The heaviest snowfalls in the state occur in the High Cascades.
