Yachats is a lovely little coastal community located about halfway down Oregon's 400-mile coastline where the Yachats River tumbles into the sea. Just south of town is Cape Perpetua, the highest point on the Oregon Coast, and the city of Florence is located 26 miles to the south. Yachats (pronounced YAH-hots,) has a population of approximately 600 and bills itself as "The Gem of the Oregon Coast." The town is quiet and serene, with a few local restaurants and hotels that offer spectacular ocean views, and several art galleries and small gift shops. The spectacular Coast Range rises up behind the town. The Little Log Church and Museum in Yachats is worth a look - this tiny church was built in 1930 in the shape of a cross and is still used for weddings and other celebrations, as well as a museum of local history. The Cape Perpetua Scenic Area is about three miles south of town and offers hiking trails through old growth forest, panoramic ocean views, naturalist led walks and various special walks and events throughout the year. The uncrowded beaches of Yachats are great for walking and beachcombing, clamming, fishing, kite flying or picnicking. Yachats also attracts a lot of photographers and storm watchers, especially in the months of December through February.

Yachats Weather & Climate

The Central Pacific Coast of Oregon enjoys a mild to moderate climate year round. The ocean is the single most influencing factor on the weather. Because of the normal movement of air masses from west to east, most of the storm systems moving across Oregon are extensively modified while traveling over the ocean. This also keeps temperatures at a moderate level all year long. As a result, winter minimum and summer maximum temperatures on the Oregon coast are also greatly modified and remain pleasant. The coastal region does, however, receive an abundant amount of rainfall, especially during the winter months. Occasional flooding along coastal streams occurs. This also accounts for the rich pastures and farmland along the Oregon coast, however. The average annual snowfall in the region is only one to three inches, and many years there is no measurable amount.
