Mount-Hood
is Oregon's largest mountain peak. It towers above the Columbia River and the Mt. Hood Recreational Wilderness Area, and is easily reached on Highway 26, approximately an hour east of Portland. Mount Hood is a summer and winter recreational paradise, and there is little you could think of that is not available here in the way of outdoor fun. There are miles and miles of trails for hiking and biking, with several beautiful lookout points along the way. Devils Half Acre is a peaceful meadow that offers a great view of Mount Hood. And the Jonsrud Viewpoint is an Oregon Trail Interpretive Site. Here, you can view the Sandy River Valley and majestic Mount Hood, as you trace the route of the pioneers as they descended the mountain in their covered wagons. Other summer activities include fly fishing, rafting and kayaking, horseback riding and golf. In wintertime there are four ski areas that surround Mount Hood, each with its' own distinct skiing opportunities. Thousands come here each winter to ski the mountain, from its' gentle sloops for beginners, to challenging deep and steep terrain for professionals. Some of the more unusual things to do at Mount Hood include riding the scenic Ski Chair that transports you to the top of Skibowl Peak for a panoramic view of Mount Hood, Mount Jefferson, Three Sisters and Mt. St. Helens! There's also bungee jumping, a summer tube hill, a ½ mile dual alpine slide, and a special kid's play zone. Lodging is abundant in the area, from camping and wilderness cabins, to family hotels and motels. Four seasons of fun and beauty makes Mount Hood one of the most visited recreational areas in the country.

Mount Hood Weather & Climate

The North Coast Region of Oregon has a climate with strong marine influences. Summers are generally cool and winters are moderate. Westerly winds are predominant from the northwest during the summer and from the southwest in the winter. These winds from the ocean bring heavy rainfall in winter and fog in the summer. The Oregon Pacific coastal zone is characterized by wet winters, relatively dry summers and mild temperatures all year. Along the lower elevations on the immediate coast, annual precipitation is between 65 to 90 inches, but on higher elevations on the west slopes, it can be up to 200 inches. Several days of abundant rainfall can cause floods. Snowfall on the coast is minimal. Extreme high or low temperatures are rare.
