Three-Capes
refers to the Three Capes Scenic Loop, a 40-mile scenic drive on the north coast of Oregon. The three capes for which it is named, Cape Meares, Cape Lookout and Cape Kiwanda, contain some of the most spectacular scenery in Oregon. The north end of the loop begins in the town of Tillamook, home of the Tillamook Cheese Factory, and travels past the southern edge of picturesque Tillamook Bay to reach Cape Meares. Here you will find one of the main highlights of the loop, the Cape Meares Lighthouse, located inside Cape Meares State Park. The lighthouse stands 217 feet above the ocean, but it is one of the shortest lighthouses on the Oregon Coast. The Three Capes Scenic Loop then continues past the charming towns of Oceanside and Netarts before reaching Cape Lookout. And, then going further south, the highway passes Cape Kiwanda before rejoining Highway 101. Within the loop are three state parks, and hiking, fishing, crabbing and clamming, birdwatching, beachcombing for shells and agates, and picnicking. And, be sure to bring your camera and binoculars for some of the best photographic opportunities to be found along the Oregon coast. Other nearby places to visit along Three Capes includes the cheese factories in Tillamook, the Tillamook Pioneer Museum and Tillamook Air Museum and Munson Creek Falls.

Three Capes Weather & Climate

The North Coast Region of Oregon has a climate with strong marine influences. Summers are generally cool and winters are moderate. Westerly winds are predominant from the northwest during the summer and from the southwest in the winter. These winds from the ocean bring heavy rainfall in winter and fog in the summer. The Oregon Pacific coastal zone is characterized by wet winters, relatively dry summers and mild temperatures all year. Along the lower elevations on the immediate coast, annual precipitation is between 65 to 90 inches, but on higher elevations on the west slopes, it can be up to 200 inches. Several days of abundant rainfall can cause floods. Snowfall on the coast is minimal. Extreme high or low temperatures are rare.
