Winchester-Bay
is a small village located on the central Oregon coast, south of the town of Reedsport along Highway 101 and just two miles inland from the Pacific Ocean. This unincorporated town sits at the mouth of the Umpqua River, and along with neighboring Reedsport, is billed as "The Heart of the Oregon Dunes." Winchester Bay is also known for Salmon Harbor, which includes a 900-slip boat marina. The Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area stretches for 47 miles along the central coast, and the community of Winchester Bay is right in the center of it all. Miles of pristine beaches, along with the Umpqua, Smith and Schofield Rivers, and many lakes and streams, makes the area an outdoor lovers' dream. There are at least 14 developed hiking trails in the area, 13 campgrounds and over 10,000 acres of off-road vehicle riding areas. If you enjoy fishing, you will love Winchester Bay, where you'll find salmon, sturgeon, bass, trout, and freshwater lakes containing bluegill, steelhead, trout, catfish and more. Other nearby attractions include the Umpqua River Lighthouse, the Dean Creek Elk Preserve and The Discovery Center in Reedsport. Winchester Bay also holds several special events each year, including an Ocean Fest in July, and in August, the Oregon Dune Fest and the Kool Coastal Classics, which is one of the largest classic car shows on the West Coast. For holiday color, Winchester Bay's "Holiday by the Sea" in November includes a boat decorating contest in Salmon Bay.

Winchester Bay Weather & Climate

The South Central Coast of Oregon enjoys a mild climate with only rare occurrences of severe weather such as thunderstorms, tornadoes or hailstorms. The most important geographic feature that affects the climate is the Pacific Ocean, which makes up the western border of the state. Most of the storm systems moving across Oregon have been greatly modified by traveling over the ocean. As a result, winter minimum and summer maximum temperatures on the Oregon coast are also moderate. The coastal region does, however, receive an abundant amount of rainfall much of the year, resulting in occasional flooding along coastal streams. This also accounts for the rich pastures and farmland along the Oregon coast. The average annual snowfall in the region is only one to three inches, and many years there is no measurable amount.
