Arch-Cape
is a small, tranquil town or "hamlet" located four miles south of Cannon Beach right along U.S. Highway 101 on the Pacific Coast of Oregon. Set between the forest and the sea, Arch Cape appeals to visitors on many levels. The beaches, of course, are a big draw. You can swim, fly a kite, build sandcastles, explore tide pools, picnic or ride a beach buggy. The most popular beaches in the Arch Cape region are Cannon Beach, Ecola Beach, Indian Beach and Crescent Beach. Cannon Beach is probably the most tourist oriented and its' shoreline is filled with hotels, inns and private homes. Cannon Beach famous for breathtaking "Haystack Rock," which is the third tallest monolith in the world at 235 feet. At Ecola State Park, you will find the best beaches for walking, and there are several nice picnic areas with barbecue grills. Ecola Beach State Park also has several good hiking trails, including one that gives an excellent view of "Terrible Tilly," the nickname for the Tillamook Rock Lighthouse. This is also a good spot for whale watching, in season. The six-mile Tillamook Head Trail runs from Cannon Beach to Seaside, and is the same one followed by Lewis and Clark. There are also a number of golf courses located near Arch Rock, along with several other state parks and recreation sites. Other recreational possibilities include surfing, sea kayaking, windsurfing and horseback riding on the beach.

The Northern Coast of Oregon has the least sunshine of any area in the state - but the gorgeous scenery more than makes up for the lack of sunshine. The northwest region is a heavily timbered area with lots of rainfall much of the year, resulting in lush pastures and rich farmland. Along the coast, the average annual snowfall is only one to three inches, with many years in which there is no measurable amount at all. Thunderstorms can occur in the valleys, but are usually not severe. Major flooding occurs in the coastal streams as a result of several days of moderate to heavy rain. Melting of a heavy snow pack on the Coast Range and/or the Cascades greatly increases the flood potential. The only other severe weather conditions on the Oregon coast are hailstorms, which are generally light and cover very small areas, and occasional high winds.
