Gearhart is a largely residential community located in the northwest corner of Oregon along Highway 101. It shares the same zip code as the town of Seaside, but is known for it's quiet and upscale tone. Gearhart is home to one of the oldest golf courses in the Pacific Northwest, established in 1892. It is open year round and is set near the ocean and features softly rolling dunes. Another golf course in Gearhart is set among rolling hills and offers fantastic views of the ocean. The stretch of beach along the community of Gearhart is one of the few in the state of Oregon where you can actually drive your car along the beach. Other activities include swimming, surfing, ocean kayaking, horseback riding, crabbing, picnicking and beach combing. Approximately 10 miles north of Gearhart is Fort Stevens State Park. This beautiful seaside park has hiking trails, beach activities and a visible shipwreck! It also lets visitors explore the former military facility for which it is named. There is a museum on site, and old concrete bunkers that tell the story of the fort that guarded the mouth of the Columbia River from the Civil War through World War II. The neighboring city of Seaside offers even more activities, as well as shops, restaurants, a beach arcade and more!

Gearhart Weather & Climate

Oregon's North Coast has the least sunshine of any area in the state but the gorgeous scenery more than makes up for the lack of sunshine. The northwest region is a heavily timbered area with lots of rainfall much of the year, resulting in lush pastures and rich farmland. Along the coast, the average annual snowfall is only one to three inches, with many years in which there is no measurable amount at all. Thunderstorms can occur in the valleys, but are usually not severe. Major flooding occurs in the coastal streams as a result of several days of moderate to heavy rain. Melting of a heavy snow pack on the Coast Range and/or the Cascades greatly increases the flood potential. The only other severe weather conditions on the Oregon coast are hailstorms, which are generally light and cover very small areas, and occasional high winds.
