Astoria
is located on the north coast of Oregon, along the south banks of the Columbia River and the north banks of Young's Bay. This city of 10,000 residents is the oldest American settlement west of the Rockies. Rich in scenic beauty, the Pacific Ocean and miles of sandy beaches can be viewed from the top of Astoria's historic landmark Column (built in 1926, the Column is 125 feet high and has 164 steps winding to the top.) The city of Astoria has been called "The Little San Francisco of the Pacific Northwest," and features a revitalized 1920s era downtown area and dozens of picturesque Victorian homes clinging to steep wooded hillsides. Just across the Bay is the town of Warrenton, a city of 4,500 residents that encompasses Fort Stevens State Park. The area of Astoria and Warrenton is a nationally significant historic region at the western end of the Lewis & Clark Trail. There are several first class interpretive attractions in the area, including Fort Clatsop, the Columbia River Maritime Museum, the Flavel House and the Astoria Riverfront Trolley. A walk along Astoria's waterfront includes the 6th Street Viewing Dock, the 14th Street Riverpark and the 17th Street Pier. You can ride a 1913 trolley beside the Riverfront through the bustling business district with its' unique shops and galleries. Children will enjoy the Uppertown Firefighters Museum and Astoria Children's Museum; both located at 30th and Marine Drive. The town of Astoria celebrates its' strong Scandinavian heritage each June with the Scandinavian Midsummer Festival. The festival features costumed locals who dance the midsummer pole dance, authentic Scandinavian musicians, and a smorgasbord of old world delicacies, ethnic entertainment, dancing, crafts and a parade.

Astoria Weather & Climate

Oregon's North Coast has the least sunshine of any area in the state but the gorgeous scenery more than makes up for the lack of sunshine. The northwest region is a heavily timbered area with lots of rainfall much of the year, resulting in lush pastures and rich farmland. Along the coast, the average annual snowfall is only one to three inches, with many years in which there is no measurable amount at all. Thunderstorms can occur in the valleys, but are usually not severe. Major flooding occurs in the coastal streams as a result of several days of moderate to heavy rain. Melting of a heavy snow pack on the Coast Range and/or the Cascades greatly increases the flood potential. The only other severe weather conditions on the Oregon coast are hailstorms, which are generally light and cover very small areas, and occasional high winds.
