Sandy
is located along the Mt. Hood Highway (U.S. 26) between Portland and the town of Mt. Hood. This vibrant city of approximately 6,500 residents offers a picturesque setting in a small town atmosphere, yet is only 45 minutes to downtown Portland. The town was originally named "Quicksand River" by Lewis and Clark, which became "Quicksand," and eventually evolved into "Sandy." The town features many recreational opportunities, starting with skiing on nearby Mt. Hood, which offers three world-class ski resorts. All three are within an hour's drive of Sandy. Mt. Hood National Forest also offers fishing, hiking, biking, picnicking and camping. The nearby Sandy River offers rafting, kayaking and fishing and there are three local golf courses in Sandy. The city of Sandy holds an annual Mountain Festival each year, usually on the second weekend in July. This event features a carnival, parade, music, dancing and comedy acts and an open-air artisans market. The Chamber of Commerce hosts a Music Fair and Feast during the Mountain Festival, featuring Sandy's own Wasson Winery beer, microbrew, lots of good food and musical entertainment. Just a few of the other points of interest include the Sandy Fitness Path & Nature Trail, Sandy Historical Museum, the Sandy Fish Hatchery, Gardens of Enchantment and Fantasy Forest in Meinig Park.

The Northwest Region of Oregon, near the city of Portland, enjoys a year round mild climate, with much less rain than the stereotype cities of the rainy Pacific Northwest. On average, this region of the state receives less rainfall than that of Atlanta, Houston, Indianapolis or Seattle. That's not to say it never rains here - it receives an average of 36.3 inches per year, mostly in the winter and early spring. The Pacific Ocean is an influencing factor on the climate, which helps moderate temperatures year round. Rarely is there severe weather such as tornadoes or flooding. Hailstorms usually occur each year, but are generally light and cover small areas. The north coastal area receives the least amount of sunshine in the state.
