Portland
is a beautiful city of approximately half a million set amid skyscrapers, trees and green space. Named as America's "Best Big City," by Money Magazine, Portland has natural beauty with unlimited outdoor recreation, a bustling arts and culture scene, exciting nightlife and fine restaurants. Outside Magazine named Portland as one of the "Ten Best Places to Live," and no doubt, its 37,000 acres of green space and parks had a lot to do with that choice. One of the largest parks in the city, 5,000-acre Forest Park, has 50 miles of hiking trails that crisscross rolling hills and open space. The city of Portland is also home to the country's smallest urban park - tiny 24-inch Mills End Park! If golf is your game, you'll find several outstanding golf courses in Portland, two of which have been rated among the top courses in the nation. You'll also find cycling and fishing, boating and other water sports on the Willamette River. And nearby Mt. Hood offers mountain climbing, hiking, snow skiing, cross-country skiing and snowboarding. Just a few of the other points of interest in Portland includes visiting the Oregon Zoo, World Forestry Center, Japanese Gardens, Oregon History Center or Oregon Museum of Science and Industry.

The Northwest Region of Oregon, near the city of Portland, enjoys a year round mild climate, with much less rain than the stereotype cities of the rainy Pacific Northwest. On average, this region of the state receives less rainfall than that of Atlanta, Houston, Indianapolis or Seattle. That's not to say it never rains here - it receives an average of 36.3 inches per year, mostly in the winter and early spring. The Pacific Ocean is an influencing factor on the climate, which helps moderate temperatures year round. Rarely is there severe weather such as tornadoes or flooding. Hailstorms usually occur each year, but are generally light and cover small areas. The north coastal area receives the least amount of sunshine in the state.
