Union
is a small town of 2,000 located on the banks of Catherine Creek at the entrance to Oregon's Grande Ronde Valley on Highway 203. The town of Union is surrounded by lush farmland and sprawling ranches, and is the gateway to the Eagle Cap Wilderness and Catherine Creek State Park. Pristine lakes and rivers are found nearby and outdoor recreational activities abound in the area, including fishing, hunting, hiking, camping, backpacking, golf, skiing and snowmobiling. The charming Victorian era town of Union seems like it has stepped back in time. Victorian homes and old brick buildings line the streets, while at the same time, the town offers modern services and businesses for visitors. Historical highlights in Union include the Union Library, built in 1912, and the Union Hotel, constructed in the Roaring 20s. Union is also home to a new 18-hole championship golf course and a recreational vehicle park. The Eagle Cap Wilderness area is made up of high alpine lakes and meadows, bare granite peaks and glaciated valleys. Elevations in the park range from 5,000 to 10,000 feet. Developed campsites for picnicking and overnight camping are located at several locations, but due to the high elevation, many of the trails are not snow-free until June or July.

Union Weather & Climate

Northeastern Oregon, near the Eagle Cap Wilderness area and Wallowa Lake, is encircled by mountains that protect the valley from the more severe aspects of weather. The mountains also prevent moisture from reaching the valley, so it has a pretty dry climate. Summers are warm and pleasant with low humidity. Most of the precipitation in the area occurs in spring and fall. Heavy snowfall in the high mountains produces snow packs that remain all year long on the higher peaks. Light snow can be expected in the valley regions from late November to early April. January is usually the coldest month and July is the hottest. Precipitation varies from just over seven inches in the valley up to 60 inches in the mountains.
