Wallowa-Lake is nestled in the high mountain region of northeast Oregon, at the edge of the Eagle Cap Wilderness. Often called the "Little Switzerland of American," the Wallowa Lake region is surrounded by snow-capped mountain peaks, pine forests, glacial valleys and peaceful meadows. Known as a family vacation site, Wallowa Lake offers swimming, fishing and boating, parasailing and other water sports. The area surrounding the lake has wilderness hiking trails, horseback riding, canoeing, bumper boats, camping and picnicking and skiing. The Wallowa Lake Tramway is a thrilling ride up to an elevation of 8200 feet, which is the steepest vertical rise in North America! Open June through September, the tram's upper terminal has spectacular views of Wallowa Lake, Eagle Cap Wilderness and Idaho's Seven Devils Mountain Range. There are 2.5 miles of groomed hiking trails at this site, and also "the northwest's highest restaurant," where you can dine indoors, or on the Alpine Patio as you look out over beautiful Wallowa Lake and the mountains. Wallowa Lake also serves as the gateway to "Hells Canyon," the deepest gorge in North America, and guided Llama treks through the Eagle Cap Wilderness are available for those seeking a backcountry adventure. Wallowa Lake is also home to the annual "Alpenfest," a Swiss-Bavarian festival held each autumn with open-air booths, displays, homemade candies, furniture, and jewelry, music and dancing and even an Alphorn blowing contest!

Wallowa Lake Weather & Climate

Mountains that protect the valley from the most severe aspects of weather encircle northeastern Oregon, near Wallowa Lake and the Eagle Cap Wilderness Area. The mountains also prevent moisture from reaching the valley, so it has a fairly dry climate. Most of the precipitation in the area occurs in fall and winter, and varies from just over seven inches in the valley up to 60 inches in the mountains. Summers are warm and pleasant with low humidity. Thunderstorms are possible in spring and summer. Heavy snowfall in the high mountains produces snow packs that remain all year long on the higher peaks. Light snow can be expected in the valley regions from late November to early April. January is usually the coldest month and July is the hottest.
