Coos-Bay
,along with the town of North Bend, forms the largest urban area along the Oregon Coast. Just to the west of Coos Bay is the town of Charleston, which is an old waterfront-fishing village. Together, the three cities from Oregon's "Bay Area." With three beautiful state parks and three golf courses, a wide variety of recreation is offered to visitors at Coos Bay. Sunset Bay State Park offers swimming in it's small, picturesque, protected bay. This is unusual on the Oregon Coast - where most beaches are too rough and rugged for swimming. Divers and surfers enjoy the calm bay waters and hiking and camping is also popular. Shore Acres State Park is built on a scenic bluff high above the Pacific Ocean in Coos Bay. This park features beautiful flower gardens, trees, shrubs and flowering plants, and the annual "Holiday Lights at Shore Acres," is held here each year in December. A fully enclosed observation building offers magnificent views of the rugged cliffs and ocean, and is a good place to spot migrating whales from December through June. Cape Arago State Park in Coos Bay is on a 134-acre narrow strip of land that juts half a mile into the ocean. Picnic tables are scattered along the bluffs and hiking trails lead down to tide pools along the beach. Besides the beach, another interesting place to visit in Coos Bay is The House of Myrtlewood. This is a factory where you can watch craftspeople make wooden bowls, spoons, ornamental clocks and other items out of the dense myrtlewood.

The South Central Coast of Oregon enjoys a mild climate with only rare occurrences of severe weather such as thunderstorms, tornadoes or hailstorms. The most important geographic feature that affects the climate is the Pacific Ocean, which makes up the western border of the state. Most of the storm systems moving across Oregon have been greatly modified by traveling over the ocean. As a result, winter minimum and summer maximum temperatures on the Oregon coast are also moderate. The coastal region does, however, receive an abundant amount of rainfall much of the year, resulting in occasional flooding along coastal streams. This also accounts for the rich pastures and farmland along the Oregon coast. The average annual snowfall in the region is only one to three inches, and many years there is no measurable amount.
